Why You Will Love This Recipe
This is a no fuss recipe, it’s the perfect recipe to add to your weekly baking routine.
Your wallet will thank you. This loaf will cost you around $1 to make. Now compare that to a nice loaf from the store!
When you make your own bread you bypass all of those extra and unnecessary ingredients that are in store-bought loaves to make them shelf stable. Things like preservatives, seed oils, and all sorts of stuff I dont want us consuming on a daily basis.
Tips and Tricks
- 1 Packet of Yeast will contain 2 ¼ tsp
- As with any bread recipe, the amount of flour you need can vary slightly with the temperature and humidity fluctuations of your house. Start with less and you can always add more but you can’t take away flour. Your dough should pull away from the bowl (if you are using a stand mixer) or if you are hand kneading it should be easy work with. Too little flour and it will be a sticky soft mess as you are kneading, but too much will give it a very firm texture.
- Weighing your ingredients will help keep your baking as consistent as possible.
How to Store Homemade Bread
- Room temperature bread can be stored for up to 3-4 days. If you store it in the fridge, you can extend this out to 5 days (at most). If you store in the freezer homemade bread can last up to 3 months.
- Place in a bread box: This is the method I use most often. It’s old school but so convenient and aesthetic! I use this one from amazon.
- Place in a bread bag or a plastic bag – I use this one from Amazon or you can use a plain old plastic gallon sized ziplock bag.
- Freeze it: For convenience sake I will double or triple this recipe and freeze the extra loaves so I can save myself time throughout the week.
How To Make This Recipe
Ingredients
- Water – Lukewarm, not hot or you will kill your yeast
- Honey or sugar
- Yeast
- Salt
- Butter, Melted or substitute with avocado oil
- All-purpose flour
- Butter, melted for brushing
Step-by-step Instructions
In a medium sized bowl add the lukewarm water, honey or sugar, and yeast. Stir to combine and let sit for 5-10 mins until the yeast activates. When it is ready it will look foamy on top.
Add the remaining flour, salt, and butter to the bowl and mix on the first setting of your stand mixer until just combined.
Next turn up to the 2nd setting and let it knead for 7 more minutes. The dough should pull away from the sides of the bowl and be soft and smooth. If you are hand mixing you can mix to combine in the bowl and then turn your dough out onto a floured surface and hand knead for 7-10 mins.
Transfer your dough to a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp tea towel or plastic wrap and allow to rise in a warm spot for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. When it is ready it should have doubled in size.
Lightly flour your work surface and turn out the dough. Use your fingers to gently pat the dough into an 8 x 12 inch rectangle. Starting on the short end, tightly roll the dough into a log, tuck in the sides and shape to create tension over the top of the loaf.
This recipe will make one loaf in a 9×5 (1.5 quart) pan or two loaves in an 8×4 pan. Lightly grease your loaf pan (Here is the one I use from Amazon) and place the dough into it to rise a second time, around 25-30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 375F and bake for 25 minutes.
